Failing the TEF IRN or the civic exam: when and how to sit it again

Neither limits the number of attempts. But both require you to wait, and not for the same length of time: 20 days between two TEF IRN sittings, 48 hours between two civic exams. Booking too early means sitting for nothing.

How many times can you sit the exam? As many as you need

Let us start with the good news, because it is not said often enough: neither the TEF IRN nor the civic exam limits the number of attempts. The Ministry of the Interior even states it explicitly for the civic exam in its general information on the exam: “it is possible to take the civic exam at any time and as many times as necessary”.

A failure does no harm. It does not appear on any application, it does not penalise a later attempt, and no text sets a limit. What does exist, however, is a waiting period and it is not the same for the two exams.

The only thing that can block you is fraud

The order of 10 October 2025 provides that a candidate found to have committed fraud is banned from taking the civic exam for two years. For the TEF IRN, theorder of 22 December 2025 requires anti-fraud supervision during all the papers. One attempt gained is never worth two years lost.

The two waiting periods: 20 days, and 48 hours

These are the waiting periods we apply between two attempts by the same candidate, and they are very different, which makes sense, since the two exams do not assess the same thing.

ExamWaiting period between two attemptsWhy
TEF IRN20 calendar daysA language level does not change in a week. Sitting the exam again three days later means paying again to get roughly the same score.
Civic exam48 working hoursA knowledge-based multiple-choice test can be made up quickly: what was missing was content to revise, and it can be revised in two evenings.
Waiting periods applied by MYSTORY FORMATION between two registrations of the same candidate. They are also the rule that our registration form checks before offering a date.

How we count, exactly

The 20 days for the TEF IRN are calendar days, weekends and public holidays included. Counting them in working days would give twenty-eight real days, and we would refuse perfectly valid dates.

For the civic exam, we use 3 working days and not two (Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays do not count). The reason is practical: you give us a date for your previous attempt, not a time. Yet 48 working hours from an unknown moment in the day only end, at worst, at the end of the day after next, and our civic sessions are in the late afternoon. So we take the assumption that protects you: one day of margin. You lose a day, you do not lose a result.

Not to be confused with the rate deadline

There is a third time limit on this site, and it has nothing to do with these: the rule of 7 working days that separates the public rate from the urgent rate. It is counted fromtoday until the exam, whereas the two waiting periods above are counted from the previous attempt to the next one. The amounts are on the prices page.

Before booking a new date: really read your certificate

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that decides everything. Booking a new date without reading your score report means replaying the same exam hoping for a different result.

The TEF IRN certificate gives a score per paper, from 0 to 499 points. The certifier’s official scale puts A2 from 200 points, B1 from 300 and B2 from 400, with a tolerance on the weakest paper (167, 267 and 367 respectively). In other words: you may have failed because of a single paper.

The three cases, and what they require

  1. 1Only one paper below, by a small margin. This is the most common case, and the easiest to fix: it is not the level that is missing, it is the method for that particular paper. Three targeted hours are often enough.
  2. 2Two papers below, including one expression paper. You need to work on production (written or spoken), and this is the only area where an outside view is irreplaceable: you cannot see your own recurring mistakes.
  3. 3A gap of more than fifty points on most of the papers. Here, it is the level, not the method. Sitting it again in 20 days without changing anything will not produce a different result: you need a full course, not a session.

Our page “TEF IRN results” page explains how to read the score report line by line. And if your doubt concerns how the session itself was run, the certifying body provides a means of appeal: according to its results page, a complaint is possible within the 30 days following the communication of results in the event of an irregularity during the papers.

Civic exam: eight mistakes of margin, and what to revise

The threshold is 32 correct answers out of 40, i.e. 80%. That leaves eight mistakes. When people fail, it is almost always on the same points, and they can all be revised:

  • Figures and durations : number of members of parliament, length of terms of office, dates. These are pure knowledge questions, and the ministry publishes the exact list for the CSP and CR categories.
  • Neighbouring institutions : National Assembly and Senate, prefecture and town hall, executive power and judicial power.
  • The 12 situational questions, which are not published and account for 30% of the mark. They cannot be learnt by heart: they are worked out by reasoning, see our article dedicated to them.

Check the category before booking a new date

Some “failures” are not failures at all: they are candidates who took the wrong category. The three categories, multi-year residence permit, resident card, naturalisation, are not interchangeable, and a certificate in the wrong category is worth nothing for your application. Check this before paying again: see how the civic exam works.

Good news, however, on the duration: the ministry states that “the certificate of success in the exam has no period of validity”. Once obtained in the right category, it is yours for good: you will never sit this exam again.

Choose the right amount of preparation, not the largest

After a failure, the temptation is to take “the maximum”. It is rarely the right calculation: what counts is themeasured gap between your scores and the target threshold. We sell four durations, 3, 6, 9 or 12 hours, and they do not do the same thing.

DurationWho it is forPrice (exam 180 € + 40 €/h)
One morning, 3 hYou already know the format and want a full mock exam, marked before you go.300 €
Two mornings, 6 hThe most common choice: a first mock exam to take stock, the marking, then a second one to check that the gap has been closed.420 €
Three mornings, 9 hYou are aiming for a specific level and want to work on the two papers that count the most, written expression and spoken expression.540 €
Four mornings, 12 hYou are starting from a long way back, or you have already failed once and do not want to go through it again.660 €
MYSTORY preparation grid, TEF IRN exam included: 180 € + 40 €/h (the exam taken on its own costs 185 €), paid according to the course payment schedule. A registration made less than 7 working days before the date falls under the urgent rate: see the rates page.

Beyond that, it is no longer a short module but a full course, and it can be funded through the personal training account: the page on CPF funding gives the conditions. We set out the full reasoning in “How long does it take to prepare for the TEF IRN?”.

The step to take before paying for anything

The free level test measures where you stand today, after your attempt. It is the test, not your impression, that tells you whether you need three hours of method or a long course. It takes less than an hour.

Booking a new date, without making the same mistake

Three precautions, and all three are worth money:

  1. 1Count your waiting period from the exact date of your previous attempt: 20 days for the TEF IRN, 48 working hours for the civic exam. Our registration form checks this and rules out dates that are too close, but it is better to know before you choose.
  2. 2Book at least 7 working days in advance. The TEF IRN exam on its own is 185 € at the public rate; below that deadline, the urgent rate applies. On a second attempt, that is money you can avoid spending.
  3. 3Do not register without having changed anything. An exam taken again in the same way gives an almost identical result. Twenty days is exactly the time for three mornings of method.

And if you had to cancel your first session rather than failing it, the registration and exam-sitting conditions of the certifying body apply: an unjustified absence gives no right to any refund, and only one postponement is accepted per candidate on validated supporting evidence within one month.

Official sources

We are a training organisation, not a government body: each rule quoted above refers to the text that sets it. If you are in doubt about your situation, the official text and your prefecture are what count.

  • General information on the civic exam, Ministry of the Interior

“It is possible to take the civic exam at any time and as many times as necessary.” “The certificate of success in the exam has no period of validity.” Threshold of 32 correct answers minimum out of 40 (80%), 45 minutes maximum, 28 knowledge questions and 12 practical scenarios.

  • TEF IRN, “Vos résultats”, Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France)

Complaint possible within 30 days following the communication of results in the event of an irregularity during the papers.

  • Registration and exam conditions: Le français des affaires

Unjustified absence: no refund. On validated supporting evidence within one month, only one postponement is accepted per candidate.

  • Order of 10 October 2025 on the syllabus, papers and organisational arrangements of the civic exam

Sets the multiple-choice test of 40 questions, the 45 minutes, the 80% threshold, the three non-interchangeable categories, and the ban on sitting the exam for the two years following a confirmed fraud.

  • Order of 22 December 2025 on proof of the level of French required of applicants for French nationality

Requires the four papers in a single session, on the same day, in person, under anti-fraud supervision, and sets the validity of the certificate at two years.

A second attempt needs preparing. It cannot be improvised

Twenty days is the time for three mornings of method targeted at the paper you failed. First measure the gap with the level test, then choose your date on the Rosny-sous-Bois session calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions

How many times can you take the TEF IRN?

There is no limit on the number of attempts. A failure does not appear on any application and does not penalise the next attempt. However, we apply a waiting period of 20 calendar days between two attempts by the same candidate.

How long must you wait to take the TEF IRN again?

20 calendar days (weekends and public holidays included) between two attempts. This is the waiting period our registration form checks before offering you a date.

What is the waiting period between two civic exams?

48 hours. As we only know the date of your previous attempt and not its time, in practice we use three full days: this is the assumption that protects you, since our civic sessions take place in the late afternoon.

How many times can you retake the civic exam?

As many times as necessary: the Ministry of the Interior states this explicitly in its general information on the civic exam. The only limit set by the order of 10 October 2025 is a two-year ban in the event of confirmed fraud.

I failed the TEF IRN because of a single paper. Do I have to retake everything?

Yes: the four papers must be taken in a single session, on the same day, for the certificate to be accepted. But the preparation can focus on the paper you failed; that is the most common case and the easiest to fix.

Do you have to pay for the exam again when you retake it?

Yes, each attempt is a separate registration. All the more reason to book at least 7 working days in advance, so as to stay at the public rate rather than the urgent rate, and not to register again without having worked on the paper you failed.

What should you do if something went wrong during the exam?

The certifying body provides a complaints procedure: according to its results page, it is open within 30 days following the communication of results in the event of an irregularity during the papers.
