Understanding the TEF IRN
What level of French for the French nationality?
Since the 2026 decree, B2 level in French (advanced independent user) is compulsory for any application for French naturalisation . This major change raises the requirement, which was previously set at B1 level. The TEF IRN is one of the two tests recognised to prove this level; see our preparation rates.
