What level of French is needed for naturalisation in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Since 2026, level B2 has been compulsory for French naturalisation, in addition to the civic exam, NAT (naturalisation) category. Several options are recognised as proof of B2: TEF IRN, TCF IRN, DELF B2 or an equivalent level 3 diploma. MYSTORY prepares candidates for the TEF IRN and holds the civic exam, naturalisation category, at its approved exam centre in Rosny-sous-Bois.

What level of French is needed for the resident card?

Accepted Answer

For the 10-year resident card, level B1 is compulsory, in addition to the civic exam, CR category. Several options are recognised: TEF IRN, TCF IRN, DELF B1 or an equivalent level 3 diploma.

What level of French do you need for the multi-year residence permit?

Accepted Answer

CEFR level A2, required since 1 January 2026, in addition to the civic exam, CSP category. The TEF IRN is one of the recognised tests to prove it. Our TEF IRN A2 training course includes taking the exam.

Is the civic exam compulsory?

Accepted Answer

Yes, since 2026. There are 3 categories: CSP (multi-year residence permit), CR (10-year resident card) and NAT (naturalisation), which are not interchangeable: each application has its own category. MYSTORY is an approved exam centre for all 3 categories. To revise, use the documents published by the Ministry of the Interior: the official lists of knowledge questions for the CSP and CR categories, and the topic sheets. For the NAT category, the reference is the Livret du citoyen: there is no published list of questions for this category. Civic training (CIR) is provided exclusively by the OFII.

Do you need to take the TEF IRN AND the civic exam, or is one of the two enough?

Accepted Answer

Both. They are two separate conditions of your application: proof of your French level (A2, B1 or B2 depending on the permit sought) and passing the civic exam in the corresponding category. Passing one does not exempt you from the other. At MYSTORY, both exams can be taken on the same day, in the same afternoon, in Rosny-sous-Bois.

Can I use the certificate from one category for another application?

Accepted Answer

No. The order of 10 October 2025 provides for three alternative categories (multi-year residence permit, resident card and naturalisation), and you take the one for your application. A certificate obtained in one category is not valid for another: the mistake only shows up when you submit your application, in other words too late. Check your category before booking.

Question 7

Am I exempt from the French test or the civic exam?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your application, and the two regimes do not have the same rules. For a residence permit, the official information on the 10-year resident card states that people over 65 are not concerned; the exemption then covers both the language and the civic exam. For French nationality, the order of 30 December 2025 accepts only one ground: disability or chronic illness, with a medical certificate; neither age, nor schooling, nor a French diploma is included. I have a French diploma: am I exempt from the TEF IRN?

Accepted Answer

A French diploma does not exempt you from the language requirement: it allows you to meet it without taking a test. The result is the same (you do not take the TEF IRN) but the legal logic is different, and so is the document to provide. The accepted documents are set by the order of 22 December 2025, explained in our article on proof of French level.

Are the OFII civic training and the civic exam the same thing?

Accepted Answer

No, and it is the most common confusion. Civic training is part of the republican integration contract (CIR) and is provided exclusively by the OFII; we do not provide it and nobody can sell it to you. The civic exam, on the other hand, is a knowledge test that MYSTORY HOLDS at its centre in Rosny-sous-Bois. We do not sell any preparation course for the civic exam: to revise, the documents published by the Ministry of the Interior are enough. Where do the exams take place?

Only at our exam centre in Rosny-sous-Bois: 46 bis rue d'Estienne d'Orves, 93110 Rosny-sous-Bois, Monday to Saturday. This applies to the TEF IRN as well as the civic exam, whichever branch you registered with. Gagny (3 bis avenue de Gagny, 93220) and Sarcelles (18 avenue du 8 mai 1945, 95200) do not host the exams: do not go there on the day of your exam; your exam notice gives the exact address. Sessions also take place in Pantin, but they are organised by IFIE Formation, an independent organisation with its own declaration of activity: we help you register there, but it is not a MYSTORY centre.

When is the next session?

All our dates are published, day by day, on the Upcoming exam sessions page: TEF IRN and civic exam, time and centre. Sessions are held Monday to Saturday in Rosny-sous-Bois. Watch the deadline: more than 7 working days ahead you pay the public price, less than that it is an urgent price; each date in the calendar shows which.

How does the TEF IRN go on the day?

Accepted Answer

You arrive at the time shown on your exam notice, with an identity document with a photo. The invigilator checks both documents, you confirm your personal details and you sign. Then come three papers on computer (reading comprehension 30 minutes, listening comprehension 20 minutes, written expression 30 minutes), followed by spoken expression, 10 minutes face to face with an examiner. That is 1 hour 30 of papers; with reception and setting up, allow half a day on site. The details are in our guide to how the day goes.

What should I bring on the day of the exam?

Accepted Answer

Two things, and neither can replace the other: your exam notice and a valid identity document with a photo. A receipt, a proof of submission or a photocopy are not identity documents. Arrive fifteen minutes before the start of the exam: a photograph is taken on site and included on your results certificate.

What happens if I arrive late for my exam?

Arrive 15 minutes before the time shown on your exam notice. In line with the certifier’s instructions, no candidate is admitted once the exam has started; for the civic exam, any lateness leads to access being refused. Unjustified lateness is treated as an absence: the registration remains payable. No penalty or late fee of any kind is applied, and justified lateness gives the right to a postponement, under the certifier’s conditions. The rule is set out in Article 6.4 of our Terms of Sale.

Phone, dictionary, notes: what is forbidden during the exam?

The list is short and has no exceptions: phones and electronic devices switched off, not on silent mode, switched off; no dictionary or reference document, either paper or electronic; no personal belongings at your seat, except your identity document; no communication between candidates; no leaving the room during the computer-based papers.

What is the format of the civic exam?

Accepted Answer

40 multiple-choice questions in French (28 knowledge questions and 12 situational questions) to be answered in 45 minutes at most, on a tablet or a computer, under direct supervision. Each question offers four answers, only one of which is correct. You need 32 correct answers out of 40, i.e. 80%, to pass. This format is set by the order of 10 October 2025.

How long does it take to get my results?

TEF IRN results are communicated within 1 to 10 working days; the official certificate is issued by the CCI Paris Île-de-France within 2 to 3 weeks and remains valid for 2 years. Civic exam results are communicated within 24 to 48 working hours, with a certificate valid for life.

How do I read my TEF IRN score?

Accepted Answer

Each paper receives a score on a scale matching the CEFR levels: A2 from 200 to 299 points, B1 from 300 to 399, B2 from 400 to 499. A level is achieved when the required score is reached in 3 papers out of 4, with a tolerance on the fourth: 167 points for A2, 267 for B1, 367 for B2. How long is the TEF IRN valid for?

Accepted Answer

The TEF IRN certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of the exam. Plan your applications ahead (residence permit, resident card, naturalisation) so that your certificate is still valid when you submit your application.

Does the civic exam certificate also expire?

Accepted Answer

No, and this is an important difference from the French test: the Ministry of the Interior states that the civic exam pass certificate has no period of validity. The TEF IRN certificate, by contrast, is only valid for two years.

How long do I have to wait before retaking an exam?

Accepted Answer

20 calendar days between two sittings of the TEF IRN, weekends and public holidays included. For the civic exam, the waiting period is 48 hours; as we only know the date of your previous sitting and not its time, in practice we allow three full days: this is the assumption that protects your result, since our civic exam sessions are held in the late afternoon. If your previous sitting took place early in the morning, call us and we will look at your case.

How many times can you retake an exam?

Accepted Answer

There is no limit on the number of TEF IRN sittings, and a failure does not appear on any file. For the civic exam, the Ministry of the Interior states that it can be taken at any time and as many times as necessary; the only limit set by the order of 10 October 2025 is a two-year ban from sitting it in the event of established fraud. Each sitting is, however, a separate registration, which must be paid for.

I failed just one TEF IRN paper: do I have to retake everything?

Accepted Answer

Yes: all four papers must be taken in a single session, on the same day, for the certificate to be accepted. But the preparation can focus on the paper you failed; this is the most common case and the easiest to fix. Our article Retaking after a failure explains what to do.

Can I practise on the real exam interface?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The certifying body publishes a practice tutorial that reproduces the real TEF IRN interface: how the questions are presented, the buttons, the timer, how you confirm an answer. Our exam notices already mention it. Open it once on a computer, not on a phone, since the exam is taken on a computer. The link is on our how the day goes page.

What is the difference between the TEF IRN and the TCF IRN?

Accepted Answer

The TEF IRN and the TCF IRN are two official tests recognised by the State for immigration and naturalisation procedures. They assess the same 4 skills (comprehension and expression, spoken and written) according to the CEFR. MYSTORY prepares candidates for the TEF IRN and holds it at its approved exam centre in Rosny-sous-Bois.

Something went wrong during my exam: can I make a complaint?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The certifying body provides a complaints procedure: according to its results page, it is open within 30 days of the results being communicated, in the event of an irregularity during the papers. Tell us the same day if you can: an incident recorded on site is handled better than an incident described three weeks later.

How long does a TEF IRN training course last?

Accepted Answer

A TEF IRN course lasts from 12 to 36 hours depending on your level, in 3-hour sessions. We always start with a placement test of about 45 minutes, included in the course: it sets the volume suited to your level, recorded in the file before signature. The TEF IRN exam itself is an adaptive exam of 1 h 30, taken in person at our approved exam centre.

What is the placement test, and do I have to pay for it?

Accepted Answer

It is a written and spoken assessment of about 45 minutes, included in your course, which comes before every training course. It serves two purposes: finding out whether your level already matches your application, and if not, recommending a number of hours of training: a teaching recommendation, used as the basis for the price of your course. You can take it online, without an appointment, or at one of our centres with a trainer beside you. It is not a diploma: the official level recognised by the prefecture is that of the TEF IRN.

Are the classes held in person or remotely?

Accepted Answer

In person, on our premises, in three-hour sessions and in small groups. You sign an attendance sheet every half-day: it is what proves the hours actually attended to the funder, so it is not a formality.

Question 30

How long between my registration and the start of the training course?

Accepted Answer

For funding through the personal training account, the access period is eleven working days between the approval of your file and the start of training: this period is imposed by Mon Compte Formation and does not depend on us. For a training course you fund yourself, the first morning takes place at the earliest 15 days after your order: this is the 14-day withdrawal period, during which nothing is asked of you.

I already have the level and my appointment is coming up: what do you offer?

Accepted Answer

Methodology support modules of 3, 6, 9 or 12 hours, in 3-hour morning sessions before your exam, the last one possibly on the morning of the exam itself, TEF IRN exam included: 300 € (3 h), 420 € (6 h), 540 € (9 h), 660 € (12 h); 370 €, 490 €, 610 € and 730 € with the exam at the urgent rate. The 3, 6 and 9-hour packs can only be self-funded, never through the CPF. Nothing is paid during the 14-day withdrawal period, then no more than 30% and the balance as the mornings go by. The first morning takes place 15 days after the order at the earliest. They do not work on your French: they teach you the format of the papers, timing and the assessment criteria. They are not eligible for CPF funding. And if the placement test shows that your level still needs to improve, we direct you to a training course: this decision is not negotiable, it protects your result. Do you offer a professional French certification?

Accepted Answer

Yes: preparation for the LEVELTEL FLE certification, registered in the Répertoire spécifique under number RS6427, from A1+ to C1. It is aimed at people who need to prove their French in a professional context rather than for a residence application. The exam is taken on computer at our centre. How much do the training course and the exam cost?

Our prices are public and shown before any payment: the TEF IRN exam costs 185 € and the civic exam 80 € per category, with combined packs. The cost of training depends on your starting level: 180 € + 40 € per hour, TEF IRN exam included whatever the funding (660 € for 12 hours, 900 € for 18 hours, 1 140 € for 24 hours, 1 380 € for 30 hours, 1 620 € for the full 36-hour course, through the CPF or with personal funding). Does the price of the training course include taking the exam?

Accepted Answer

Yes, whatever the funding. The pricing formula is the same for everyone and published: 180 € for the TEF IRN exam, plus 40 € per hour of training, whatever the length of the course. That is why a 12-hour course costs 660 € and a full 36-hour course 1 620 €. Taken on its own, without any training hours, the TEF IRN exam costs 185 €. The exam is included whatever the funding, CPF or personal funding: for a training course you fund yourself, it follows the course payment schedule and is not paid for when you order.

Question 35

Why does the exam price change depending on the date chosen?

Accepted Answer

Because the public prices (185 € for the TEF IRN, 80 € per category for the civic exam) apply to a registration made at least 7 working days before the exam. Less than that, it is an urgent price: 250 € for the TEF IRN, 100 € per category for the civic exam. On Saturdays, the civic exam costs 100 € per category for a session 7 working days or more away, 120 € per category if sooner. It is not a penalty: fitting a candidate into a session that has already been closed means reopening the list, notifying the CCI and producing the exam notice within the day. On a preparation course, the extra cost applies only to the exam part (+70 €): the hourly rate stays at 40 €/h.

Question 36

How do I pay for my training course with the CPF?

Accepted Answer

On the Mon Compte Formation app, search for “Préparer son test d’évaluation IRN”. Price of the training course: 1 620 €. Training course eligible for CPF funding. The CPF covers up to 1 500 € per course. When you register on Mon Compte Formation, a compulsory flat-rate contribution, set by the French State, is paid directly on the platform. It is deducted from the price of the course: it is not added to it. Exemptions: jobseekers, and courses co-funded by the employer. If you are exempt, an amount left to pay may appear on Mon Compte Formation for the 36-hour course, unless additional funding covers it. Once your registration is approved, we arrange a 45-minute placement test, included in the course, to define your programme.

Question 37

Can you prepare for the civic exam with the CPF?

Accepted Answer

No, and nobody can get it funded for you by the CPF: civic training (CIR) is provided exclusively by the OFII, and MYSTORY does not provide it; we hold the exam. You can revise using the documents published by the Ministry of the Interior: official lists of questions for the CSP and CR categories, topic sheets, and the Livret du citoyen for the NAT category. Taking the exam at MYSTORY costs 80 € per category.

Question 38

Can an exam taken on its own be funded by the CPF?

Accepted Answer

No. The personal training account only funds training hours: an exam sitting without training is a separate service, paid directly. This applies to the TEF IRN as well as the civic exam, and to the packs that combine them.

Can I pay in instalments?

Accepted Answer

For a self-funded training course, payment is spread out as the training course progresses: the terms are in article 5 of our Terms of Sale. For an exam or a platform: Payment in one go: by bank card or with Klarna, on the secure payment page. Pay in instalments from 100 €: Klarna in 3 instalments (subject to acceptance by Klarna) or Lenbox in 3 or 4 instalments (fees apply: about 1.59% in 3 instalments, 2.40% in 4 instalments). Taking out credit is a commitment and it must be repaid. Check that you can afford the repayments before committing yourself. For a training course: no payment during the 14-day withdrawal period, then no more than 30% before the first morning and the balance as the mornings go by, by card, Klarna in 3 instalments or Lenbox in 3 or 4 instalments (fees shown before you confirm). The TEF IRN exam is included in the price.

Do I need to add VAT or other charges to the price shown?

Accepted Answer

No. The prices shown are net of tax: MYSTORY is exempt from VAT under article 261-4-4° a of the General Tax Code. The price shown is the price you pay. On a file funded by the personal training account, no cancellation scale can be applied to you, and the compulsory flat-rate contribution is paid directly on Mon Compte Formation: we neither collect nor invoice it.

How do I get to your centres by public transport?

Rosny-sous-Bois, where the exams take place: RER E, Rosny-sous-Bois station, 6 minutes’ walk, or metro line 11 to Rosny-Bois-Perrier. Gagny: RER E, Gagny station, 8 minutes’ walk, with street parking nearby. Sarcelles: RER D, Garges-Sarcelles station, 10 minutes’ walk, or tram T5, Les Flanades stop.

What time should I arrive on the day of the exam?

15 minutes before the time on your exam notice, with the exam notice and a valid identity document. This margin is not a matter of politeness: arrive 15 minutes before the time shown on your exam notice. In line with the certifier’s instructions, no candidate is admitted once the exam has started; for the civic exam, any lateness leads to access being refused. Unjustified lateness is treated as an absence: the registration remains payable. No penalty or late fee of any kind is applied, and justified lateness gives the right to a postponement, under the certifier’s conditions. Allow plenty of time on the RER E: one cancelled train costs a whole session.

How do I cancel or postpone my exam session?

Accepted Answer

In writing, to contact@mystoryformation.fr, and as early as possible. Two separate rules, which are not decided in the same place. Refunds: possible up to 7 working days before the session date, working days, the same count as for the urgent price, and not the 14 calendar days of the withdrawal period. After that deadline, and if you are absent on the day of the exam, the registration remains payable. Postponement: it is only granted on valid supporting evidence accepted by the CCI Paris Île-de-France. The decision belongs to the certifying body, not to us: we pass on the request and the document. The exam conditions allow only one postponement per candidate, on supporting evidence approved within one month. These rules are in article 6 of our Terms of Sale.

Question 45

Can I cancel my training course after registering?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and the rules differ depending on the funding. For a CPF file: fourteen working days to withdraw from the confirmation of the order on Mon Compte Formation, directly from your account, without any sum being due; this right ends on the first day of training. For self-funding: fourteen days from the signing of the contract, by registered letter, by email or online, and no payment before the end of this period. After this period and before the start of training, we offer a postponement without penalty, or a refund of the sums paid minus the costs actually incurred and justified.

I have a disability: can the exam be adapted?

Yes. The order of 10 October 2025 expressly provides for adjustments for candidates with disabilities, and our team looks at the possible adaptations before the start of training or registration for the exam; ask in advance, not the day before the exam. Are your premises accessible to people with reduced mobility?

Our centres are establishments open to the public and we pay particular attention to the compliance of our premises with accessibility standards, especially for people with reduced mobility. Before booking, call us on 06 81 43 16 54 or write to contact@mystoryformation.fr stating your needs: we will confirm the reception conditions at the centre concerned, and refer you to a competent organisation if we cannot meet them.

I have a complaint: who should I send it to?

In writing to contact@mystoryformation.fr, or by post to 14 rue Bichat, 75010 Paris. You will receive a reply within fifteen working days. If it does not satisfy you, you can refer the matter to the consumer mediator after a period of two months, under article L. 612-1 of the Consumer Code: the appointed mediator is CM2C, 49 rue de Ponthieu, 75008 Paris (www.cm2c.net).

What level of French for the multi-year residence permit?

Since 1 January 2026, the multi-year residence permit requires CEFR level A2, proven by a recognised test such as the TEF IRN. At MYSTORY, the A2 course includes taking the exam, in Gagny or Rosny-sous-Bois, our approved exam centres.

What level of French for the resident card?

Accepted Answer

The resident card (10 years) has required level B1 since 1 January 2026. Our TEF IRN level B1 course prepares you for it, from 12 to 36 hours depending on your level, in 3-hour sessions, exam included.

What level of French for naturalisation / French nationality?

Accepted Answer

Naturalisation has required level B2 since 1 January 2026 (law of 26 January 2024). The TEF IRN is accepted by prefectures: our B2 training course trains you in the written and spoken argumentation required at this level.

Where can I take the TEF IRN in Seine-Saint-Denis?

Accepted Answer

MYSTORY is a TEF IRN exam centre approved by the CCI Paris Île-de-France in Seine-Saint-Denis. Sessions Monday to Saturday in Rosny-sous-Bois, registration handled by us, on its own (185 € for a registration made at least 7 working days in advance) or included in a training course.

Can you combine the B2 training course and the civic exam?

Yes, it is even recommended. Naturalisation candidates must both validate TEF IRN B2 and pass the civic exam (NAT category). MYSTORY prepares candidates for the TEF IRN and holds the civic exam at its approved exam centre in Rosny-sous-Bois, with a TEF IRN + civic exam pack at 265 €, paid directly. Civic training itself (CIR) remains provided by the OFII: we do not sell any preparation course for the civic exam. To revise for the NAT category, the reference is the Livret du citoyen, published by the Ministry of the Interior.

Do you also need to take the civic exam for the resident card?

Is A2 enough for naturalisation?

No. Level A2 only allows you to obtain the multi-year residence permit. For the 10-year resident card, level B1 is required, and for naturalisation, level B2 has been compulsory since 2026. At MYSTORY, we can support you step by step, from A2 to B2.

Does MYSTORY offer a training course for the civic exam?

The NAT questions are taken from the Livret du citoyen.

The TEF IRN is a 1 hour 30 adaptive exam (format in force since 1 April 2025) made up of 4 compulsory papers that cannot be taken separately: reading comprehension (30 min, 20 questions), listening comprehension (20 min, 20 questions), written expression (2 tasks: a message of about 40 words and a formal letter of about 100 words) and spoken expression (2 sections of 5 minutes). To achieve level B2 (400 to 499 points), you must obtain the required score in 3 papers out of 4, with a tolerance of 367 points on the fourth.

Is the TEF IRN valid for long?

Accepted Answer

The TEF IRN certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of the test. After that, you will have to retake the exam if your administrative application has not yet been submitted. We advise you to plan your training course around your applications so that your certificate is still valid at the time of submission.

What is the difference between TEF IRN and TCF IRN?

Accepted Answer

Both tests are recognised by the French State for immigration procedures. The TEF IRN is administered by the CCI Paris Île-de-France, while the TCF IRN is run by France Éducation International. Both assess the same skills. At MYSTORY, we prepare candidates for the TEF IRN, but the skills worked on are transferable to the TCF IRN.

The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions (28 knowledge questions + 12 situational questions), to be taken in 45 minutes maximum on a digital platform. You need at least 32 correct answers out of 40, i.e. 80%, to pass.
